Tis the season…for high school music conerts

It’s that time of year when every kid in any kind of music activity at school is busy performing in concerts. With each of the girls in multiple music groups, we’ve spent the last 3 nights attending choir, band, and orchestra concerts. Frankly, it’s been great to be there and see the girls performing in their respective groups.

In case you weren’t able to make it, here is a sampling of music from each of the nights.

Choir
Anna sings “Still, Still, Still” with the Heritage Singers.

They also ended the evening with their traditional performance of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah; this is performed with band and orchestra students accompanying – a very nice job.

Band
Emily plays flute on a fun piece called “A Crazy Mixed Up Christmas Concert”.

Orchestra
Anna plays violin on “The Christmas Song” with the combined orchestras. One of Anna’s good friends, Victoria, sings along. Unfortunately, this concert is held in the school cafeteria with very poor acoustics and lighting (it’s a fundraising evening with desserts and drinks).

Emily dances & Anna plays at school assembly

The school had an assembly yesterday to introduce all of the Fall sports teams. Emily danced with the Pacesetters. She’s in the back row, starting out 3 in from the right and ends up 5 in from the right. The video is a bit grainy, but she does an awesome job!

The band also played before and after the assembly. Anna has joined the band this year as a percussionist, playing the marimba and the cymbals. Here’s a quick clip of her playing with mallets on the cymbal.

Anna & Emily spring piano recital

The spring piano recital was back on May 3, but I’ve been a bit lax in entering information here on the blog. I was good about getting the videos up to YouTube and on Facebook, but a bit slow here.

However, here are the piano performances from Anna and Emily.
Unfortunately, Anna’s video cut short about 45 seconds from the end of the piece.

Anna: Beethoven – Sonata Op 27, No 2 I. Adagio sostenuto (“Moonlight”)

Emily: Haydn: Allegro scherzando Hob. III 75/4

Dance Recital 2014

Anna and Emily danced in their dance recital this evening. They’ve been taking dance lessons from Miss Nina for the past 12 years. It was a real pleasure to see them up there dancing with their friends.

There is rumor that this may be the last year Miss Nina will be teaching (her 65th year teaching). It was great that both sets of grandparents were there to see them dance.

Anna & Emily at Regional Solo Festival

This past weekend, Anna and Emily spent the day at Regional Solo Festival for high school students. Anna played violin and sang vocal solos; Emily played flute.

Linda stayed very busy accompanying both of them and a couple other students. We’re very lucky to have an accompanist on retainer.

Anna’s braces come off

20140312-135411.jpg
Just one year ago (February 23, 2013) Anna got braces on a day that a blizzard hit town. They called and said the office was empty and they could put the braces on if we could get her there. Yesterday, on a day of 75°, she got the braces off. She’d been keeping it a secret; she figured it was a surprise that she got them, so she wanted it to be a surprise that they were being removed.

She came home with congratulations balloon tied to a caramel apple. It reminded me of when my braces came off (25 years ago) and all the foods that I ate because I finally could.

Such a beautiful smile, Anna!

Anna playing pit orchestra

Anna is playing Violin I in the pit orchestra for the high school production of “Peter Pan”. She’s been going to practice for the past couple weeks, including days off from school and on Saturdays. The show started this past week and I was able to go this evening (Linda and Emily were participating in the Girl Scouts International Fair).

The music was well done, but I really enjoyed the show also. It’s fun watching the friends of my daughters up on stage. It’s even more fun knowing that the music is being made by my daughter!

The picture above is a peek into the side of the pit just as the show had ended.

Anna and her friends met at the house the other night for pictures prior to the WPA Dance (reportedly, stands for Women Pay All). This is the current version of the Sadie Hawkins dance and it’s quite impressive how the dresses and suits rival that of Prom when I was younger.

Anna and her friends had dinner at one of our favorite Italian restaurants and then went on to the dance. I’m not sure how much dancing went on – but then they returned to the house for food and hanging out.

Emily chose not to participate in the WPA Dance; instead, she chose to hang out with her girlfriends, eat food, and watch movies.
