Tour de Brew

This past week found Linda and I celebrating our 18th wedding anniversary.  We celebrated by participating in the Tour de Brew bicycle ride.  This is a ride that helped raise money for Bike Walk KC, an organization that promotes and lobbies for healthy living in the Kansas City area.  The tour travels along a route connecting historic Kansas City breweries; most of the buildings are now gone and some are still there, but in the form of loft apartments.

We met with neighborhood friends and did the 30-mile ride.  We averaged about 12mph and finished in just over 2.5 hours.  We had a great time and enjoyed the food and beverages after the ride.

Family Gathering

It’d been some time since we were all together (admittedly because of my very full schedule), but we were finally able to spend a day with Linda’s parents at Easter.  A delicious honey-baked ham and a whole array of side dishes filled our bellies well.

Afterwards, we all played dominoes and ate even more.

Thank you, Grandma and Grandpa Maag!

We are truly blessed with such wonderful family.

The Kia Goes in For Repair

Our trusty Kia Sedona minivan was struck from behind last week while Linda was driving the girls to their different activities.  Fortunately, nobody was injured and a great friend stopped to help get the Anna on to her  appointed destination.  After several days of insurance talks and body shop estimates, the Kia was delivered today for repair.  The tailgate is inoperable and will need replaced.

The bumper is also broken.  The bumper stickers survived; however, they will likely not make it back home.  Remember, this is Linda’s car – I’m sure she’ll find replacement stickers.

It was a nice surprise to arrive home to find a shiny, new Nissan Altima in the garage – but it’s only a rental.

Piano Recital Time

Today was the Fall piano recital for Linda’s studio.  It’s amazing to see and hear the progress made by the students each semester.

Some of them have been with her for many years and these high schoolers make beautiful music.

Some of the students had their first recital of their young musical career.

Anna and Emily did well – their videos will be posted over the next few days.

Dancing with my love

Linda and I enjoy dancing – we don’t get to do it very often, but we do enjoy it.  Most opportunities are provided at weddings; sometimes we can dance at parties or dinners.  Sometimes we get silly and dance in the kitchen.

I love holding Linda close and dancing along to slow songs.  Every time we dance to slow songs, I close my eyes and think back to dancing on our wedding day.

Finally, there are few things more fun than dancing like a fool and singing along loudly with songs from the 70s and 80s.  Man, that brings me back to carefree days of middle school and high school.

In the immortal words of Kenny Loggins:

Loose, footloose
Kick off your Sunday shoes
Please, Louise
Pull me offa my knees
Jack, get back
C’mon before we crack
Lose your blues
Everybody cut footloose

Biking Across Kansas – Linda Does It

So I reported back in February that Linda bought a new bike with the goal to participate in Biking Across Kansas.  This is a week-long ride where bicyclists ride from the Colorado border to the Missouri border about 60-80 miles per day.  Riders then sleep in tents or gym floors in the small towns that break up each stage.

Linda trained daily since February riding about 20 to 30 miles either in the basement (on the trainer) or on the great paved trails we have here in Kansas City.

Her parents and both girls travelled out with her on the first day and gave her a great option of staying in a hotel room each night (albeit with a kid in the bed).

Each day was hot and rainy…but she really loved it.  She completed 194.5 miles of the ride – stopping, as planned, on day 4 so that she could return to Kansas City to run the Music Teacher convention she’d been planning.

We’ll be training again next year – for both of us to complete the entire ride.
